Adverbs Modifying Verbs Example: the bird was chirping outside. (where?) Outside
Example: the bird chirped today. (when?) Today
Adjectives Modifying Other Adverbs- It was a fiercely competitive game. (Adverb fiercely modifies the Adjective competitive)
Example: The exceptionally brave police officer was given an award. (Adverb exceptionally modifies the Adjective brave)

To determine whether a word is an adverb ask yourself if the verb tells where, when, how, or to what extent.
